Getting There

  • Fly to Liberia: (recommended) Many airlines fly into Liberia (LIR) directly from the U.S. including Delta, Continental, American Airlines and Northwest Airlines.
  • Fly to San Jose: alternately you can fly into San Jose and transfer to LIR via Sansa, TravelAir, or Nature Air, or take a bus to La Cruz.
  • Taking the bus from San Jose: Have the taxi take you to the bus terminal and get a ticket inside where it says Del Du. A line will form outside for the bus grab all your stuff and get in line. It is a 4 hour bus ride to La Cruz and the bus usually stops twice so you can get some thing to eat or stretch your legs. Get off the bus in La Cruz from the police station and walk down the road next to the gas station across the street and turn right at the end (about 3 blocks) walk another two blocks and there are always taxis at the park. Take notice of Pollo Frito Rico Rico. The best fried chicken on the planet. The cab will take you right to the beach Playa Copal.
  • Getting a Rental Car: Dozens of well known rental car companies (as well as some local companies) have offices in Liberia and San Jose. You probably will not need 4-wheel drive.

  • Driving Directions:

    From the Liberia airport entrance/exit.
Turn Left (East) it is approximately 10-12 km to Route 1 (panamerica highway) Landmarks: The only stoplight in the province, the FoodMall with Burger King.

Turn Left (North) it is approximately 60-70 km to LaCruz (~1 hour)

Notes: There may be police stops along the way, have your passports handy, the police may want to know if you are going to Nicaragua - Tell them "La Cruz"

Landmarks: Upon your arrival in La Cruz: There will be a big yellow gas station on the left & a pink "Urgencia" medical clinic on the right. Drive a little past the gas station, to where the green highway signs (right) is.

Turn Left (West) In about 500m there is a "Banco Popular" on the left.
Just up the block is a market "Licorera Juaja" that has snacks and drinks - if you want to pick anything up.
Continue straight up the hill. You will pass the park on your left & fried chicken "Pollo Frito Rico Rico" on the right. Continue right out of town. It will be approximately 10-15 km (~20-30 minutes) (mostly dirt road).

You may see signs for "EcoPlaya" & signs that say "Germana y Andrea".
When you see a "EcoPlaya 2.5km" sign, look for a right turn, there will be signs at your turn for "Restaurante Copal" "Resedencia Pura Vida" and "Kite Centre 2000" Turn Right.
It is less than 1km to the house - continue to the end of the road (bear left-ish at "Acceso Publico").

Gear:
  • Bringing your Own Gear: Because of the usually very strong winds it is highly unlikely that anyone will use a kite larger than a 12 meter. Or a WS sail larger than a 5.4 (and then only in November). If possible, bring your own harness. There will be only a few available for rent or sale.
  • Renting Gear: Kite Wind Surf, Costa Rica will have the following brands of gear available for rent. Weekly and daily rates are available. Cabrinha Crossbow, Switchblade kites, Liquid Force Boards, Neil Pryde Sails, JP Australia Boards
